WA: Burst sewage pipe causes river health fears
Parts of Perth's Canning River have been closed because of health concerns after 160,000
litres of sewage seeped into the water from a burst pipe.
Water Corporation managing director JIM GILL says the spillage happened about 7.30am
(WST) today and took almost two hours to contain.
The Canning River, one of the city's major waterways, has been closed along a stretch
of about four kilometres, from Canning Bridge to Salter Point.
Health Department spokesman BRIAN DEVINE says the water may have been polluted with
harmful viruses and pathogens from the sewage.
He says the river may not be fully open for up to 48 hours.
A department spokeswoman says anyone coming in contact with the water is at risk of
contracting gastrointestinal illnesses, as is anyone eating fish caught in the closed
sections of the river.
