Qld: Hopeful penis puppeteers audition in Brisbane

BRISBANE, Aug 27 AAP - It was difficult to tell who was more nervous ... those auditioningor those judging those auditioning.
The two brave souls who turned up at today's Brisbane round of auditions for the ravecomedy Puppetry of the Penis were easily outnumbered by a panel of seven judges.
But it was the judges who looked decidedly bashful.
Radio breakfast host Halina Baczkowski - a self-confessed puppetry virgin - was moreworried about hygiene than anything else.
"I was really scared they were going to shake my hands," she laughed.
Another judge, arts journalist Rodney Chester, was inspired by the brashness of the duo.
"It was eye opening - they had a lot of balls," he told AAP.
The panel, including puppeteer stars Brett Hartin (Hartin) and Aaron Bloomfield, weredeciding whether the two Queensland boys had what it takes to bare it all on the worldstage.
Trevor De Yong, 23, and Matthew Garner, 33, were asked to demonstrate their best genitalorigami renditions of the windsurfer, the Eiffel Tower, and the most difficult of tricks,the hamburger.
Trevor, a fisherman from Brisbane, was coaxed into the audition by his girlfriend,while Matt, a labourer from Caboolture, was looking for a career change.
Despite being a tad nervous, both impressed the panel.
"They were terrific - I was quite impressed," Hartin said.
"The main thing is you have to be able to do the tricks, but from there you have tobe able to keep an audience entertained and charm them for an hour."
Puppetry of the Penis has taken Brisbane by storm, playing to sold-out audiences forthe last four weeks, and gearing up for a five-week tour of regional Queensland.
Internationally the show can't keep up with demand and is currently running in LosAngeles, New York, Edinburgh and Toronto, further shows are planned for Asia, South Africaand North America.
And for today's hopeful auditioners?
"This is not embarrassing - I hope I never see any of you again," said De Yong, whowill know whether he's been successful in a few weeks.
